Manchester United close in on Rebeca Bernal signing

Manchester United are closing in on the signing of Mexico international Rebeca Bernal from Washington Spirit as they look to add another defensive option before the Women’s Super League transfer deadline.

The 29-year-old can operate at centre-back or in defensive midfield and remains under contract with the NWSL club through 2027. United are reportedly confident of completing the move before the WSL window closes on Thursday.

Manchester United working to complete Bernal deal

The Cutback first reported that United were finalising an agreement for Rebeca Bernal, with ESPN subsequently reporting that a source had confirmed the club were nearing a deal for the Mexico international.  Bernal was absent from Washington Spirit’s 1-0 win over Bay FC on Sunday, with her absence listed as excused.

She joined the Spirit from Liga MX Femenil side Monterrey in February 2025, signing a three-year contract. Bernal has since been used both in central defence and midfield, underlining the versatility that could make her particularly useful to United.

This season, she has increasingly operated as a defensive midfielder after spending much of her first campaign in Washington at centre-back.

Bernal could strengthen two areas for United

Adding another centre-back has been an important part of United’s summer recruitment following changes to their defensive options.

Millie Turner departed for Birmingham City, while Gabby George completed a move to Brighton. Bernal’s ability to play centrally in defence as well as at the base of midfield would therefore give head coach Eva Olid additional flexibility.

The Mexico international also brings significant experience despite having spent fewer than two seasons in the NWSL. Before moving to the United States, Rebeca Bernal spent eight seasons with Monterrey and made more than 250 appearances for the club. She helped Rayadas win four Liga MX Femenil titles before leaving for Washington.

Mexico captain brings international experience

Bernal has also been a long-term member of the Mexico national team and captains her country. She made her senior international debut in 2017 and helped Mexico win their first women’s football gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games. Bernal scored the only goal in the final against Chile.

Washington Spirit reported in May that she had surpassed 60 appearances and scored nine goals for Mexico.  Her ability to contribute offensively has been evident throughout her club career as well, particularly from penalties and set pieces.

United continue late-window recruitment

A deal for Bernal would continue a busy end to Manchester United’s transfer window.

United completed the signing of Sweden winger Monica Jusu Bah from BK Häcken on Friday, following the earlier arrivals of goalkeeper Janina Leitzig from Leicester City and defender Andrea Medina from Atlético Madrid. Jusu Bah signed a four-year contract and became United’s third senior signing of the summer.

Bernal would become the fourth if United can complete the agreement before Thursday’s deadline.

PakarPBN

A Private Blog Network (PBN) is a collection of websites that are controlled by a single individual or organization and used primarily to build backlinks to a “money site” in order to influence its ranking in search engines such as Google. The core idea behind a PBN is based on the importance of backlinks in Google’s ranking algorithm. Since Google views backlinks as signals of authority and trust, some website owners attempt to artificially create these signals through a controlled network of sites.

In a typical PBN setup, the owner acquires expired or aged domains that already have existing authority, backlinks, and history. These domains are rebuilt with new content and hosted separately, often using different IP addresses, hosting providers, themes, and ownership details to make them appear unrelated. Within the content published on these sites, links are strategically placed that point to the main website the owner wants to rank higher. By doing this, the owner attempts to pass link equity (also known as “link juice”) from the PBN sites to the target website.

The purpose of a PBN is to give the impression that the target website is naturally earning links from multiple independent sources. If done effectively, this can temporarily improve keyword rankings, increase organic visibility, and drive more traffic from search results.
