A contract lasting only until the end of the season leaves little time for a player to learn what a new head coach expects. Denver Summit FC have reduced that risk by signing Gemma Bonner.

The experienced centre-back previously worked with Denver head coach Nick Cushing at Manchester City between 2018 and 2020. She arrives from Liverpool with more than 360 professional appearances behind her and will wear the No.13 shirt.

Denver are gaining leadership and defensive experience, but the prior relationship with Cushing may be the detail that allows Bonner to influence the team immediately.

Why the Cushing Reunion Matters

Gemma Bonner joined Manchester City in 2018 and spent the first two years of her spell working under Cushing. That period gave the defender an understanding of his tactical expectations, training methods and standards away from matchdays. Although both have developed since then, they will not need to build their working relationship from the beginning.

That familiarity matters because Denver have not signed Bonner as a long-term prospect. Her agreement runs only through the remainder of the season, placing greater value on how quickly she can become effective.

Cushing already knows how Bonner communicates, responds under pressure and operates within a competitive squad. Bonner, meanwhile, has some idea of the demands she will encounter from the head coach.

Liverpool’s Record Appearance-Maker Leaves Again

Bonner’s latest Liverpool spell began in 2023 and lasted three seasons, but her connection to the club stretches across nine campaigns. She became Liverpool Women’s all-time leading appearance-maker when she played her 135th match in 2023. Bonner eventually departed with 177 appearances for the Reds.

Her importance was established long before the record. She captained Liverpool to consecutive WSL titles in 2013 and 2014, placing her at the centre of one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.

That experience gives Denver a player who understands how standards are maintained across an entire season. She has not only played for successful teams; she has held responsibility within them.

Previous American Experience Removes Another Unknown

Moving to Denver will not be Gemma Bonner’s first experience of football in the United States. She represented Racing Louisville during the 2021 and 2022 seasons before returning to Liverpool. That background means she has already experienced the travel, environments and demands involved in the American game.

Denver therefore avoid another potential adaptation issue. Bonner must become familiar with new teammates and surroundings, but the wider context will not be entirely new.

More Than Defensive Security

Bonner’s Manchester City record also shows that her contribution has not been limited to defending. She scored ten goals across four seasons while helping City win two Women’s FA Cups and the Women’s League Cup. That history gives Denver another potential threat in attacking situations as well as an experienced presence at centre-back.

Her main responsibility, however, will be helping the team function more consistently. General manager Curt Johnson highlighted the example Bonner can set within the squad, suggesting Denver expect her daily influence to matter alongside her match performances.

The challenge is transferring that influence quickly enough for it to affect the current season.
